Summary

To operate the switchboard and related equipment and to provide dispatch service.

Responsibilities 

1. Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency telephone lines from members of the public, refers callers to the appropriate department or person, campus wide; takes calls for service to be dispatched to law enforcement.
2. Dispatches, via radio and telephone, law enforcement units to respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents reported by members of the public; prioritizes calls waiting to be dispatched.
3. Enters calls for service into the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system in order to dispatch appropriate responses to emergency and non-emergency incidents reported by members of the public.
4. Enters calls initiated by field units into CAD in order to maintain a record of officers' locations and activities and monitor the subsequent actions of officers.
5. Monitors and operates several complex public safety radio systems.
6. Queries National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) and other local, state, and national computer files to determine status of vehicles, persons, and property, and determine existence of wants and warrants; accesses computer systems to provide information to and request information from other agencies.
7. Enters information into NCIC. Confirms validity and status of information for other agencies.
8. Monitor fire alarm, trouble and burglary alarm system, electronic security access system and video camera system. Maintain record of lost and found items.
9. Data entry using the BANNER system.
10. Greet and assist customers in a friendly, courteous manner.
11. Test emergency systems to determine proper working order; notify appropriate personnel if inoperative. Perform duties with little or no supervision.
12. Complete application for Michigan Notary and performs all duties inclusive of position.
13. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: functional supervision may be exercised over support staff or student assistants.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

• High school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience

• Four years office/clerical experience.
• Four years experience using personal computers and basic software packages including spreadsheet/database software.

• Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form; write clear, concise, and accurate reports using proper grammar and correct spelling and punctuation utilizing Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) narrative.
• Retain and recall information and accurately communicate this information to others.
• Read and interpret maps.
• Willingness to work any shift, weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary.
• Comply with rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Department of Public Safety and Police Services.
• Demonstrated ability to type 25 words per minute using a computer keyboard.
• Ability to successfully pass a background investigation.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to obtain and annually maintain National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Vision sufficient to read computer screens, maps, print outs, manuals, and other written materials and simultaneously observe multiple video monitors.
Speech sufficient to speak in a clear and distinct manner, making oneself understood in person and over the telephone and radio.
Hearing sufficient to hear conversations in person and over the telephone and radio.
Dexterity to operate telephones (regular and cellular), portable radios, computers and computer peripherals, alarms, and other related communications and office equipment.
Mobility sufficient to move around in a communications center environment; and endurance sufficient to work within a confined area and sit for long periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted in the Communications Center of the Department of Public Safety and Police Services and involves working varying shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work involves receiving telephone calls from persons who are involved in emergency and non-emergency situations and who may be hysterical, frightened, or angry.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
