Research Engineer I - Civil Engineer Michigan Tech Research Institute (Ann Arbor, MI)
The Research Scientist I – Civil Engineer position provides leadership and support for MTRI programs focused on the development and application of civil engineering to remote sensing and geospatial analysis research projects to solve governmental and societal needs. Familiarity with one or more technical and research areas such as CAD, digital twins, building information models, pavement condition assessment, traffic monitoring, programming, statistical analysis, asset management, and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods is needed. The applicant will be expected to develop, support, select, apply for, and lead research projects that apply their knowledge of civil engineering to research questions. The ability to improve the processing and analysis of remote sensing and NDE data through custom coding and analysis for infrastructure condition assessment will be important. Examples of current research areas include paved and unpaved road condition assessment with drones, developing digital twins for bridges, improving hydrological modeling inputs, identifying road surface types using remote sensing data, modeling flooding and scour risks to railways and bridges, automating assessment of rail grade crossing safety, modeling risks to power plants, developing web-based decision support systems, and improving water quality at wastewater treatment lagoons. Biological and Radiation Safety Officer Main Campus (Houghton, MI)
The Biological/Radiation Safety Officer manages Michigan Technological University’s biological and radiation safety programs to protect faculty, staff, students, members of the community, and the surrounding environment from potential exposure to harmful biological and radiological materials. Research Engineer / Scientist I - Environmental Remote Sensing Michigan Tech Research Institute (Ann Arbor, MI)
The Research Scientist I – Remote Sensing position provides support for MTRI programs focused on the development and application of remote sensing and geospatial analysis to solve governmental and societal needs through sponsored research. Knowledge of remote sensing theory and an understanding of remote sensing applications for environmental and/or Earth science research is required. The applicant should be familiar the theory and application of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for environmental research. The applicant will be expected to help develop proposals for remote sensing research projects that apply their knowledge of sensing and image processing to research questions. The applicant will also be expected to conduct fieldwork in remote environments. Examples of current research areas the Remote Sensing Scientist may support include wildland and prescribed fire mapping and effects assessment, Great Lakes aquatic sensing, invasive species mapping, wetlands assessment, wildland fire danger and emissions mapping, processing and analysis of remote sensing data through custom coding and analysis, and improved geotemporal visualization of complex data and patterns.
