Summary

Perform in areas of food service to include food preparation and production, including customer service, equipment operation, and cashier duties during the academic year. Responsible for the performance of routine and special custodial duties in facilities and grounds as assigned during the summer months. Work is performed in accordance with instructions and schedules provided, with results regularly inspected. Provide excellent customer service to a wide variety of internal and external customers.

Responsibilities 

● Direct the activities of student food service workers in assigned area.
● Assist in the training and instructions of regular student employees in assigned area. Maintain records and prepare required reports in assigned area.
● Order food, schedule students, maintain inventory, operate electronic cash register and card readers. Take money to accounting.
● Responsible for cleaning, sanitation, and safety in assigned area.
● Operate all equipment used in preparation and production of menu items employing safety procedures. Understand and interpret recipes.
● Perform catering duties including set-up, serving, delivering, cleaning, table service, and all aspects of clean-up. Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner.
● Maintain knowledge of portion size, food items, and ingredients of foods being served. Adhere to current uniform policy as posted.
● Participate in any training necessary to accommodate changes in operation which directly affect regular assigned duties. Responsible for garbage removal and cardboard recycling in assigned areas.
● Conduct daily, weekly, or monthly physical inventories in designated areas as assigned by supervisor.
● Sweep, mop, clean, vacuum, wax and buff various types of floor surfaces.
● Clean and maintain all meeting and conference rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, rest rooms, offices, labs, stairwells and other public and work areas.
● Clean washroom floors, walls and fixtures sanitize as necessary. Replenish washroom soap, paper, and vending products.
● Maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe work area and ensure a safe environment throughout the facility. Remove garbage, paper and recycling.
● Clean all types of wall and ceiling surfaces.
● Use and maintain a variety of cleaning and maintenance machines, ladders, tools and equipment.
● Wash windows, clean furniture, dust windowsills and ledges and clean fixtures, change light bulbs in various fixtures inside and out of building.
● Maintain building entrances according to conditions by removing snow and ice, applying sand and salt, and removing debris.
● Adhere to current uniform policy.
● Be responsible for minor wall and ceiling repair including spackling, sanding and painting.
● Participate in any training necessary to accommodate changes in operation which directly affects regular assigned duties.
● Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in university continuous improvement initiatives.
● Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

● High School diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience

• Experience working in a food service operation working with food production in a commercial, institutional, restaurant or hotel kitchen or similar food service operation.
• Experience serving customers.
• Experience with primary duties as a custodian, or an equivalent combination of experience to equal one year full time.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience maintaining a variety of floor surfaces using auto-scrubbers, burnishers, buffers, carpet extraction vacuums, and other commercial cleaning equipment.

• Possess a valid driver’s license and meet Michigan Tech University’s vehicle use requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to work evenings and weekends, and at times be called in to work with very short notice.
• Demonstrated ability to use basic internet and web-based applications.
• Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and perform work with minimum supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a clean and safe facility.
• Demonstrated ability to perform general maintenance tasks, including changing lights, bulbs. The use of ladders will be required to perform some of these tasks.

● Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out basic written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems in standardized situations.

● While performing the duties of this job the employee must occasionally work in elevated locations or in areas where chemical, biological, or physical hazards may be present. In addition, the employee may be required to work in other high hazard conditions including areas where fumes or particulates are present; areas where risk of electrical shock is present; or areas where moving mechanical parts may be present.
