Summary

The College of Computing at Michigan Technological University invites applications for multiple tenure track faculty positions in the broad areas of biomedical data science and health informatics. Data Science, in all of its forms, is a major priority for the College, and these positions are critical to that effort. The College currently offers 15 degree programs, including a BS in Data Science, MS in Data Science, and MS in Health Informatics. Preliminary discussions regarding a PhD in Data Science have begun, and the College is actively planning for a Department of Data Science to house these programs, faculty, and staff. The anticipated start date is August 2025.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Applied Computing within the College, although, depending upon background, joint appointments with other departments are possible. Primary consideration will be for applicants at the rank of Assistant Professor, although applicants with the education, experience, and accomplishments commensurate with a higher rank may be considered for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Applicants with research and/or teaching interests in all areas of biomedical data science are encouraged to apply, including AI/ML in biomedicine and healthcare, clinical decision support systems, health data analytics and big data, computational epidemiology, medical imaging and computer vision, longitudinal data analysis, mHealth and Internet of Medical Things, biomedical data ethics and governance, security and privacy, and similar areas.

Michigan Tech is Michigan’s flagship technological university, and starting next year will be one of only four Carnegie classified R1 institutions in Michigan. The university provides its graduates with an extremely high return on investment through its academic rigor and focus on experiential learning. Located in Michigan’s scenic Upper Peninsula’s Anishinaabe/Ojibwe lands on the south shore of Lake Superior, the university also provides a high standard of living. The community offers a small-town environment with outstanding four-season recreational opportunities.

Providing additional research support, the successful candidates will be supported by two of the university’s fastest-growing research institutes, the Health Research Institute and the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC). The latter is composed of multiple centers, including centers focused on Biocomputing & Digital Health, and AI. Faculty with research interests in biomedical data science are expected to be active contributors to the Computational Science and Engineering PhD program, which supports doctoral research in a wide array of engineering and science problems through the application of software and hardware technologies. Finally, the new H-STEM Complex opened in January 2024, which has significantly increased our biomedical research capacity and serves as a focal point for biomedical research. As a result of these cross-disciplinary collaborative efforts, the university is successfully building a vibrant biomedical research enterprise where interdisciplinary expertise is shared and valued.

Michigan Tech attracts world-class faculty and staff who enrich the educational experience of smart, motivated, and adventurous students. Applicants who are committed to promoting a sense of belonging and contributing to an equitable and inclusive learning environment for all are strongly encouraged to apply (https://www.mtu.edu/diversity-inclusion/).
