Summary

The Department of Computer Science at Michigan Technological University invites applications from current Michigan Tech employees for the position of Chair of the Department of Computer Science. We seek an enthusiastic and visionary leader to help us accelerate growth in the areas of undergraduate and graduate enrollments, externally funded research, and industry engagement, as well as support continued excellence in teaching. We are continuing to build a culturally diverse faculty committed to teaching and scholarship in a multicultural and inclusive environment, and we seek a department chair who supports these aspirations.

Responsibilities 

Help the department accelerate growth in the areas of undergraduate and graduate enrollments, externally funded research, and industry engagement, as well as support continued excellence in teaching.

Perform the basic operations outlined in the Computer Science Department charter, which include the general operation of the department, chairing department meetings, controlling and maintaining departmental budgets, evaluating faculty and staff, making salary recommendations to the dean, facilitating faculty and staff development, maintaining records relevant to personnel actions, making teaching assignments and schedules consistent with faculty preferences and teaching load guidelines, making committee assignments as appropriate, fundraising and alumni and corporate relations, representing the department on- and off-campus, and maintaining accessibility of self to the faculty and staff.

Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

PhD in Computer Science or closely related field

Required Experience

A professional record of accomplishments within the area of computer science commensurate with the rank of professor at Michigan Tech, including a strong record of scholarship, teaching, service, and academic leadership.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Experience with faculty development and student support.
Experience supervising staff.
Experience building connections with alumni, industry, and prospective students.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Strong administrative, supervisory, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Ability to maintain an approachable demeanor, effectively communicate with faculty and staff, and respond to their needs.

Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
