Summary

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering (CEGE) at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) invites applications and nominations for a faculty position at the assistant professor level in the field of environmental engineering. Michigan Tech CEGE seeks outstanding candidates who can add to the existing research and teaching strengths in multiple research areas. A faculty position at the associate or full professor level may be considered. The committee will start reviewing applications from November 18, 2024. The search will continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities 

Research:
  ● Develop and sustain an active externally funded research program.
  ● Publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
  ● Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in their academic and research endeavors.
Teaching:
  ● Teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Service:
  ● Contribute to the continuity and accreditation of the Environmental Engineering program.
  ● Participate in service activities at departmental, college, and university levels and external academic and professional communities.
  ● Contribute to initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion within the department and university.

● Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.
● Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

● Must hold a Doctorate degree in civil or environmental engineering or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
● Must hold at least one engineering degree—either at the undergraduate, master’s or doctoral level—in civil or environmental engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

Required Experience

● Demonstrated ability to conduct research in environmental engineering or a closely related field.
● Ability to conduct independent research, lead or contribute to collaborative research, and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Demonstrated ability in writing research proposals and a successful history of securing external research funding.
● Experience in face-to-face and/or online teaching courses related to Environmental Engineering (e.g., Surface Water Quality Engineering, Sustainable Engineering), with a track record of effective instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the candidate’s area of expertise.
● Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.
● Possession of Professional Engineer (PE) credentials or eligibility for licensure.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Expertise in Surface Water Quality Engineering, including but not limited to the following areas: aquatic ecology, remediation and restoration in freshwater and marine systems, water quality modeling and/or observation, aquatic biogeochemistry, large lake systems, coastal engineering, or fate and transport of pollutants in aquatic systems.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Expertise in surface water quality engineering related to emerging research areas such as sustainability and climate change.
● Proficiency in data analysis and modeling software relevant to surface water quality.
● Practical experience in environmental engineering.
● Ability to establish and maintain connections with industry professionals.
● Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
