Summary

The Head Golf Professional is a highly collaborative and innovative Auxiliary Services leader responsible for providing operational leadership and directing all aspects of the programming and operations at Portage Lake Golf Course. The Head Golf Professional performs all duties with a commitment to the highest level of customer service and total satisfaction of all customers, including transforming the golf experience for Michigan Tech students, members of PLGC, and daily patrons.

Responsibilities 

1. Ensures the highest standards for golf services and programs, golf course and practice areas, and other course services.
2. Monitors the performance of all daily operations, functions and services; assures high standards and total customer satisfaction
3. Assists Director of Auxiliary Business Services with:
a. The development of long-range, annual business, and capital plans.
b. Management of departmental finances to maintain a self-supporting and sustainable operation. Create strategies to develop reserves.
c. The development and preparation of budgets, including forecasting and reviewing all facility revenues and expenses on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis
d. Analysis and monitoring of financial statements, reviews income and expenses relative to plans. Implements corrective measures as needed, and reports status on a monthly basis
e. Care and maintenance of all physical assets and facilities
4. Manages and oversees all accounting, inventories, banking, audit procedures, cash flow, and establishes controls to safeguard funds and assets.
5. Develops and implements general policies. Approves specific operational policies, programs, and procedures.
6. Establishes personnel policies; ensures proper hiring, training, supervising, personal development, payroll and corrective action in accordance with University guidance, best practices and safety.
7. Prepares and implements an annual marketing and advertising. Directs the publication of newsletters, direct marketing, and promotional materials
8. Develops and maintains all customer safety and emergency policies and procedures
9. Develop, maintain, update, and utilize customer database to promote sales and satisfaction
10. Oversee and maintain a profitable retail merchandise operation that presents a diverse and desirable array of golf equipment, apparel, and accessories
11. Develop and oversee player development programs utilizing PGA of America Playbooks; “Player Development”, “Know Your Customer”, and “Connect With Her”
12. Responsible for the oversight of daily golf operations, working a variable schedule including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends as needed.
13. Play golf with a variety of customers in competitive and non-competitive situations as time permits.
14. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
15. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

● Associates Degree in Business or related field or equivalent experience.
● Member of the Professional Golfers Association or registered in the program.

Required Experience

● 3 years experience working in the golf industry
● Experience teaching golf
● Experience directing golf tournament operations

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Bachelor’s degree in Business, Golf Management, or related field
● PGA Class A Professional
● Experience with Fore Up Golf, Jonas, Clubcaddie or similar POS Software
● Experience using lean practices and continuous improvement tools
● Certified Coach in the U.S. Kids curriculum

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Maintain a credible golf game and remain current on teaching innovations.
Experienced computer user including Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications.
Established history of providing excellent customer service.
● Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and written/oral communication skills.
● Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to all applicable OSHA standards.
● Demonstrated ability to :work independently. work with accuracy and attention to detail. professionally handle high stress situations. work independently and take initiative to solve problems. use judgment when dealing with confidential information. work effectively with frequent interruptions. teach and train others. work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

● Experience using Lean practices and continuous improvement tools
