Summary

Michigan Tech and The Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being, a unit within Student Affairs, is seeking candidates to fill this position. The triage/crisis care position is a clinical position requiring strong assessment and case management skills. The position will coordinate services for Michigan Tech students who present to the CSMHW for the first time to initiate counseling, or who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

Responsibilities 

• Provide daily coverage to the center’s initial assessment/walk-in hours.
• Assist in responding to incoming or emergent clinical issues that present to the center.
• Facilitate recommendations and coordination of care for students who may need referral to an outside provider/agency.
• Maintain the center’s network with community providers to document students’ ability to follow through with referrals to off-campus treatment.
• Collaborate with the Director and Assistant Director for Clinical Services to establish clear work-flow procedures that are consistent with the center’s established walk-in clinic hours.
• Maintain clinical documentation.
• Provide outreach programming.
• Keep apprised of all regulations, i.e. mental health laws, federal guidelines and legal interpretations.
• Participate on university committees as appropriate.
• Provide consultation with faculty and staff as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate accredited mental or physical health training program (social work, mental health counseling, nursing, etc).

Required Experience

● Licensed as a Limited License Social Services Technician, Licensed Social Service Technician, Limited Bachelor’s Social Worker, Bachelor’s Social Worker, or registered nurse within six months of hire.
● Experience using personal computers and basic software packages.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Two years of post-graduate experience in a mental or physical health setting or other relevant clinical experience.
● Experience in crisis intervention.
● Experience with making referrals and collaborating with treatment centers as well as community mental health resources.
● Demonstrated knowledge of using an electronic medical records system.

● Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
● Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
● Ability to maintain timely clinical documentation.
● Demonstrated ability to work appropriately and effectively with others on organization committees, teams, and groups.
● Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
● Ability to adhere to work attendance requirements.
● Ability to work evening and weekend hours based on operational need.

● Demonstrated knowledge of higher education systems and resources.
● Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and a commitment to student growth.

● Moving small- to medium-sized boxes of materials in and out office during special events
