Department: Chemical Stores

Summary

Provide excellent customer service to the University community by assisting the Chemical Stores Manager and other departmental staff with the Chem Stores Operations including procurement, receiving, inventory, delivery and distribution of scientific supplies and chemicals.

Responsibilities 

1.Provide excellent customer service to the University community.
2. Performs the delivery and distribution of chemicals and scientific supplies to the campus community in an accurate, consistent and safe manner.
3. Operate University vehicles including delivery van and truck.
4. Reviews shipping and receiving documents for accuracy.
5. Assists in the stocking/shelving of inventory.
6. Assists in tracking chemicals from receipt to disposal utilizing University tracking systems; this includes data entry.
7. Safely dispense liquid nitrogen and dry ice.
8. Fills order requisitions for delivery and distribution.
9. Must maintain knowledge of proper handling, storage and distribution of hazardous materials in accordance with Federal, State and University safety regulations.
10. Assists in placing orders with vendors using existing blanket orders, a university purchasing card, creating new purchase requisitions, or other vendor specific payment options.
11. Follows written procedures for creating and maintaining sales receipts, QuickBooks entries, and other accounting tools.
12 Manages assigned university issued purchasing card according to university rules.
13. Assists Environmental Health and Safety with preparation and dispatch of shipment materials regulated as Hazardous Materials by the Department of Transportation and the International Air Transport Association.
14. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

● High School Diploma or equivalent

Required Experience

● 2 years of experience in customer service.
● 2 years of experience using a computer with basic software packages.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience in retail and/or industry sector is preferred.
• Experience in maintaining logs of all inventory products/supplies for a facility.
• 1 year of experience in the safe delivery of products/supplies by motor vehicle.
• Experience in safely distributing hazardous chemicals and compressed gases.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet Michigan Technological University’s vehicle use requirements.
● Familiarity with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) as it applies to safety data sheets and labels.
● Familiarity of chemistry with regards to chemicals and supplies.
● Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team and contribute to the overall smooth operation of a service environment.
● Demonstrate basic computing skills to include the use of computer inventory software.
● Demonstrated ability to independently organize and prioritize work assignments.
● Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy using information and have great attention to detail.
● Exhibits ability to read and interpret inventory reports, sales reports, and packing slips.
● Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment when dealing with confidential information.
● Demonstrated capability of employing basic math skills.
● Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work under short deadlines.
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively under conditions of frequent and multiple interruptions.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Familiarity of current regulations and laws pertaining to regulated substances and hazardous materials.
• Previous laboratory safety knowledge/experience.
• Working knowledge of Point of Sales (POS) software and SDS database management software.                                                                  •

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

•Exposure to chemical fumes is usually low, however, may become elevated in certain situations.
• The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate.
• While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; use hands to push/pull equipment such as hand trucks or carts; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb step ladders. The employee must frequently lift up to 50 pounds and move heavier items with assistance.
• The employee is required to drive a motor vehicle on a daily basis.
• The employee is required to walk outdoors in all weather conditions on a daily basis.
• The employee is required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective eyewear, chemical resistant gloves, and shoes. during specific activities.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.

Required University Training:

  • Employee Safety Overview

  • Anti-Harassment, Discrimination, Retaliation Training

  • Annual Data Security Training 

  • Annual Title IX Training

Required Departmental Training: 

  • Within in 90 days of hire:
    Department of Transportation Hazardous Material Shipping
    Additional upon hire will include completing Stores Clerk- Chem Stores document
    • Hazard Communication Training
    • Hazardous Material Receiving Training
    • Safe Lifting and Other Ergonomic Training
    • Chemical/Safety Training
    • Gas Cylinder Training
    Additional training as assigned.
    Required Uniform:
    • Adhere to current uniform policy as posted
