Summary

Michigan Technological University invites applications for an assistant teaching professor/professor of practice faculty position in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Applicants for the position are required to have a Ph.D. and/or an M.S. with significant industrial experience in chemical engineering or a closely related discipline by August 11, 2025.

Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education with a student-centric, learner-oriented, experiential approach to instruction and mentoring, as well as developing innovative pedagogical methods.

Responsibilities 

Teach undergraduate and split-level undergraduate/graduate-level chemical engineering courses.

Adapt and/or develop innovative pedagogical methods.

Foster and contribute to a collaborative culture within the workplace.

Engage in professional service activities within the department, university, community, and organizations.

Communicate (written and oral) with internal audiences (students, peers, supervisors, etc.) and external audiences (societies, alumni, etc.).

Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work and commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

A Ph.D. and/or an M.S. in chemical engineering or a closely related discipline is required.

Required Experience

For those with a Ph.D. as their terminal degree, there is no minimum industrial experience requirement. For those with an M.S. as their terminal degree, a minimum of ten years of industrial experience is required.

Experience in mentorship and teaching (including informal and/or short-course teaching).

Desirable Education and/or Experience

At least one degree in chemical engineering.
Formal teaching experience, particularly of core chemical engineering courses.
Teaching (or other) certifications or participation in instructional workshops.
P.E. (or F.E.) licensure or experience practicing under a licensed P.E.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.

Additional Information

The Department of Chemical Engineering currently has 14 faculty members (11 tenure track and 3 instructional track), 296 undergraduate students, and 36 graduate students. Externally funded research has more than doubled in the past five years, and the Department is experiencing growth in its undergraduate enrollment. The Department's Unit Operations Laboratory is one of the best in the nation, with two pilot plants, numerous bench-scale processes, and a state-of-the-art process operation and control facility. Michigan Tech's graduates are eagerly sought by industry because of our emphasis on hands-on training and creative problem-solving
