Summary

Michigan Technological University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences invites applications for a position as an Assistant Teaching Professor. This position will focus on teaching College Algebra and developing a co-requisite for College Algebra (tentatively titled College Algebra Plus). We seek a colleague who is passionate about supporting students in introductory mathematics courses and can design learning experiences that effectively do so.

Assistant Teaching Professors at Michigan Tech are eligible for promotions that mirror the tenure track (Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, and Full Teaching Professor) and participate in shared governance.

The faculty in the Mathematical Sciences department are committed to high-quality instruction, with both instructional-track faculty and tenure-track faculty constantly innovating and refining instructional approaches.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

Master’s degree in mathematics education or a closely related discipline.

Required Experience

Teaching mathematics at the secondary or postsecondary level.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Extensive experience teaching College Algebra or Precalculus
• Experience with project- and/or problem-based learning
• Curriculum Development
• Teaching students with diverse mathematical backgrounds
• Experience with evidence-based pedagogies
• PhD in Mathematics Education, Mathematics, or related field
• Experience working across disciplines
• Experience with ALEKS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching
• Familiarity with educational research on teaching and learning at the secondary and or postsecondary level
• Demonstrated success in working with people with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.
• Fluency in the English language

   

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
