Michigan Tech’s Career Services partners with hundreds of companies annually to connect our talented Huskies with exciting pathways into the workforce. The Senior Career Advisor collaboratively leads the office’s efforts in delivering and enhancing our renowned career development initiatives while also serving as a career advisor.

The Advisor will assist in providing students and alumni career exploration and development services; provide job search assistance for full-time, co-op and internship opportunities; promote relationships with employers to enhance recruitment; develop and present on-campus and community workshops and seminars; coordinate assigned areas of unit operations and share in general responsibilities of the department.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

• Serve as a liaison with faculty, staff, and employers for Career Services, championing and gathering key informative practices for delivery of career development offerings for students that will drive forward Career Services’ initiatives
• Alongside the Assistant Director, serve as a liaison across campus to coordinate activities associated with career development
• Alongside the Assistant Director, collaborate with campus stakeholders to elevate and enhance student participation in career development activities
• Advise and counsel students, alumni and prospective students in career exploration, development, and job search strategies, using a variety of methods/tools
• Design, facilitate and evaluate activities and workshops regarding career preparation including resume and interview preparation, job-search strategies and experiential learning preparation
• Maintain knowledge of hiring practices and trends
• Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to ensure that services delivered to students are audience-specific, timely, relevant, needs-based, aligned with leadership’s priorities and student learning outcomes, and can be evaluated
• Performs other duties as required/assigned by manager
• Participate and actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives and strategies and apply knowledge to everyday work
• Actively engage in creating a welcoming and professional work environment for staff, students, and visitors
• Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work

 

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

● Bachelor’s degree

Required Experience

● Two or more years of professional work experience in higher education, or the equivalent combination of military, education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
● Two or more years planning and delivering educational experiences and opportunities to students
● Demonstrated ability to manage outreach and collaboration efforts with faculty, administrators, and students concerning career opportunities
● Demonstrated ability to document steps in a process and make recommendations to improve processes
● Demonstrated experience utilizing spreadsheets to track, analyze, interpret, and present data

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Masters Degree
● Experience working in a higher education career services department
● Demonstrated experience utilizing AI tools to administer and assess career coaching outcomes
● Experience at a STEM-related institution of higher education
● Report writing experience

● Communication skills: Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
● Self-management skills: ability to manage time effectively, learn and contribute to overall departmental tasks and goals.
● Project coordination skills: ability to lead or contribute to planning or organizing projects, programs, services, etc.
● Conflict resolution skills: ability to use interpersonal skills to develop and maintain positive professional relationships and resolve conflict in a team environment and with individuals from various backgrounds and experiences.
● Analytical skills: ability to analyze information and offer sound recommendations.
● Computational skills: ability to perform basic mathematical computations to assist with financial operations and/or data collection, analysis, and reporting.
● Computer skills: proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software, preferably Microsoft Office or Google Suite.
● Ability to function effectively and make sound decisions in stressful and crisis situations.
● Ability to handle multiple projects, services, activities, etc. in a timely and professional manner in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment.
● Ability to be flexible, diplomatic, patient, service-driven, and a self-starter.
● Ability to work independently under limited supervision and in teams.
● Ability to make reasoned administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive and confidential issues.
● Ability to work evening and weekend hours based on operational need.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Experience using career services related software and its application in a placement/career services environment
● Experience advising technical or engineering-related students

● Demonstrated success in working with persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

● Moving small- to medium-sized boxes of materials in and out office during special events
● Driving personal or university vehicles or golf-cart during special events to transport materials and supplies to events
● The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate
● Fast-paced

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
