Summary

This position assists in overseeing the training and scheduling of student staff at Michigan Tech’s Campus Store and University Images, serving as part of a team dedicated to customer service. By creating comprehensive training programs and identifying development needs, the role ensures that all department employees meet best practice guidelines and uphold the university’s brand values. Additionally, responsibilities include assisting students and customers, mentoring and coaching student employees, and maintaining procedure documentation. Through these efforts, the position contributes to the department’s goal of delivering exceptional customer service, maintaining operational efficiency, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Responsibilities 


• Supervise and collaborate training and scheduling of all student staff, store staff, and temporary employees on sales floor processes, cash registers, point of sale operations, daily restocking procedures, creating/receiving transfers, and other day to day processes; maintain database of training materials
• Prepare onboarding training for new employees and refresher training for returning employees; update and maintain employee handbook
• Develop, monitor, and communicate monthly student employee work schedules for the Campus Store and University Images; document all scheduling processes, create/update standard operating procedures of all store functions and job duties, and compile in manual
• Assist with sales month close and with year end inventory process
• Provide daily student employee mentoring and coaching
• Greet and assist customers, respond to questions, and provide outstanding customer service to a diverse population of customers through mail, email, telephone, and in-person transactions
• Open and close store and cash registers using point of sale system and assist with daily verification of sales, to include investigating and resolving discrepancies in reconciliation of payment tenders. Operate cash registers, manage financial transactions, and balance cash drawers (transaction types include scholarships, tuition, department charges, refunds, etc.)
• Perform merchandising financial processes as necessary including but not limited to reporting financial aid sales, verifying and adding indexes to the merchandising specific inter account bills, verifying gift card activations, and requesting cash bags from Cash Hub
• Assist with bi-weekly payroll process and all related paperwork for hiring staff, temporary staff and students. Verify web time entry for Campus Store and University Images as proxy approver when needed
• Occasionally verify student ID cards for tuition charges and enable in CS Gold when needed
• Maintain security of confidential information
• Occasionally work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
• Assist with special projects related to store operations
• Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in university continuous improvement initiatives
• Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work
• Other duties as assigned

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Possess a valid US Driver License and meet Michigan Tech University’s vehicle use requirements

Required Experience

• Minimum of four years retail experience, four years office/clerical experience, or a combination
• Advanced computing experience

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in business, education, related field, or five years of equivalent experience
• Minimum of two years college retail experience
• Experience working with WinPrism/PrismCore, WPAdmin, Banner, CSGold, Canvas, and other university-related software
• Proven work experience teaching, training, and/or scheduling
• Familiarity with Lean principles or continuous improvement strategies

• Ability to convey complex information and communicate in an understandable way
• Excellent interpersonal and observation skills
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Office Suite, specifically calendar and sheets

• Minimum of three years basic computing skills
• Extensive knowledge of various teaching methods
